CHAPTER 12

AISLINN

My nerves were strung taut and my gut was in so many knots I doubted I would ever be able to untangle them to eat the homemade pasta. Hearing Luciana say it would have taken a powerful being to take Grams shouldn’t surprise me. We had known that from the beginning. Hearing a Pleiades confirm it made it sink into my bones.

“We will head to the grocery store to purchase food,” one of the witches told Lucia before turning to face us. “Is there anything we can pick up while we are there?”

Fiona inclined her head. “We don't have any espresso, so if you prefer a strong cup of coffee in the morning, you should pick some up. Feel free to check the pantry inside. We should have supplies for a couple of days to feed all of us. And pick up anything Zeph needs. Cat food or needs a litterbox.”

The witch laughed. “Zeph eats what we eat. And he uses the toilette like the rest of us. As far as I know anyway.”

Lucia chuckled and shook her head. “Zephyrus isn’t like any house cat. He’s a magical being, capable of things even I don’t fully understand. And his favorite meal is Vitello Tonnato. I'm not a big fan of the veal dish myself.”

Hearing that a cat used a loo and ate what the rest of us did, didn’t surprise me in the least. Yet, I could see Fiona’s surprise. She was expressive and didn’t bother hiding what she was thinking when around friends. Nodding, Fiona smiled as Luciana said something to her witches then turned and headed into the garden.

I shared a look with Fiona and Violet, both of whom shrugged. “I say we follow in case she has questions,” I added in a whisper.

Violet tilted her head to the side and gestured to the open gate. “Sounds like a good idea. Pymm’s Pondside is unlike any other house. The magic of your ancestors is far stronger than is normal for witch residences and you have Fae inhabitants all over the place.”

One of Fiona’s eyebrows arched to her hairline. “Is there a chance that Luciana will discover what I am?” Fiona spoke in a regular tone drawing attention.

My heart skipped a beat when one of the witches that remained behind looked over at us. I chuckled and nudged her shoulder. “No one cares that you’re a Fae-witch hybrid, Fi. You’re part of both groups.” I knew she was referring to the fact that she was a nicotisa. That fact had prompted Grams to bind Fiona’s powers when she was young to keep her safe and hidden from detection. Otherwise, she would have been hunted relentlessly by Tainted witches. I didn’t know these witches well enough to trust they wouldn’t spread word about what she was and I had no idea what Lucia could tell.

Violet smiled and lifted one shoulder before she entered the garden. Lucia and Zephyrus were walking through the plants and herbs. The familiar went right for the gate on the far side that led into the Shakleton family cemetery.
